Favorite Non-Chocolate Candy

A number of people have asked me about my favorite candies. Back in the 80s, I adored Lemonheads, Nerds, and Sprees—candies that could be saved and savored, and parceled out over many hours. Such candies are particularly good choices for the frugal-minded, or for kids who need to scrounge around for soda pop cans to take to the bottle return (one of the best parts about growing up in Michigan: the 10-cent deposits). Today, I lean toward the gummy/i world, though not indiscriminately. A good gummi bear should have an appropriate balance of chew and give—not too soft and never tough. It should not be oversized, which would sacrifice taste and texture. It should provide distinct color-flavor notes (my favorites are raspberry-red, pineapple-white, and strawberry (not lime) green). And it should be fresh, for a stale gummi is no joy. My choice: Haribo Gold-Bears, petite and al-dente, with etchings on their stomachs to represent, I guess, bear fur. Haribo is a German company that has been making gummi bears since 1922. They also turn out lovely gummi twin cherries and sour cherries.
Recent discovery update: Bissinger's Pomegranate White Tea pandas! A refreshing new take on the gummy. In Chicago, available at the Whole Foods and sometimes at Sam's Wine store.
Another update! Two new flavors are now available: Pink Grapefruit with Grapeseed and Guava with Camu CAmu!

i also mix them w/ li hing mui powder for extra flavor.
My love of Gummie Bears has recently been rekindled by a trip to the movie theater. Instead of purchasing the usual buttered popcorn I saw a bag of the sugary bears gleaming in a glass case screaming for me to purchase them for my enjoyment. When I popped the first bear into my mouth it brought back one of my favorite childhood memories of sitting on my Grandmothers front porch. It was a tradition for her to give me a bag of delicious Gummie Bears after church. I would sit on that old stone porch for hours having one just one bear at a time and slowly letting each bear dissolve until the whole bag was gone. Those sweet bears remind just how much I miss my Grandma. I am also reading your book Stealing Buddha's Dinner for my English class in Hawaii. I am also a child of the 80's and can relate to the various foods, music and clothing you write about in the book. Thank you for the trip down memory lane.

i like the gummy bears too. before, i dont even like it because its chewy and its making my jaw sore everytime i eat it. but when i was in high school, there was fundraising and they're selling gummy bears.the only thing is that it has lihing powder on it. the sweet orange powder? i hope you know it.it's good if you put it on the gummy bears because it has this sweet taste, you should try it! and i always buy it before because it only cost $1 and sometimes we make fun of the one who sells it.we ask them for a refund if some of the gummy bears aren't whole. though they dont give us a refund at all. ;)
