Favorite Cupcake

cupcake.jpgWhile on book tour for the hardcover of Stealing Buddha's Dinner I had the chance to check out some wonderful restaurants and shops, including Bouley Bakery in New York, Tartine in San Francisco, and the legendary Chez Panisse in Berkeley. The Bay Area offers endless charms, but one of my favorites has to be Citizen Cake’s version of the classic Hostess chocolate cupcake. The ratio of icing to cake—the chocolate weight, richness—the supple textures—the sense of play channeled through a serious patisserie—all created a moment so perfect that I was overcome with sadness, knowing that I soon would have to leave it behind. With all due respect to Magnolia Bakery et al, Citizen takes the cake. (Note from July 08: this does not apply to the separate Citizen Cupcake store.)

I want to start by saying that i think its funny that you got the chance to travel all over to many places and try tons of different types of cupcakes, and yet your favorite one is the most generic one.
But i can't deny that i do love hostess cupcakes, but i can say that they aren't my favorite. My favorite has to be from a place called cake couture. The frosting just melts in your mouth so it's not too heavy and not too sweet..its perfect!!
From one food lover to another, i suggest to try them!

gummy bears is also one of my favorite sweets, especially the li hing mui gummy bears! There always seems to be just the right amount of delicious flavors of li hing mui and gummy juices in every bite. It gets me every time I need to satisfy my sugar cravings!

I also think that San Francisco has great food. I was also wondering about where the best food is created? I know iron chef and cooking competitions try, but I was wondering where you think the Kingdom of Great Food is? After all, your book has a lot of different categories, but where do you remember or want to visit because of its great food?

Kendra, I just looked up Cake Couture--is it only in Hawaii? I really need to get to Hawaii!

Jeremy, I think good food can (or ought to) be found anywhere. That's why it would be impossible for me to pick just one actual favorite food or dish or even cupcake. Great cities like San Francisco have the advantage of variety and diversity, but so many small towns also have culinary claims to fame (I'm thinking right now of all the wonderful sour cherries in summertime northern Michigan).

Just finished your book Stealing Buddha's Dinner and absolutely loved it. As an Viet/American "foodie" living in NWI, I totally related to your life story.

Although, I can't call myself a "short girl" (I', 5'9"), I am really looking forward to reading your new book soon.

I will definitely be following your work!

BTW, I too prefer the cake over the frosting/icing!

To start, i really like how you used food to describe and give the reader a new view on your memories from your childhood. Its made me think about how i associate food with memories of my past. I really enjoyed the chapter, school lunch, and how you vividly described how you would eat the hostess cupcake and it made me remember my favorite childhood candy, which was reeses and how i would eat the choclate ring on the outside and save the peanut butter on the inside.
